BIOGRAPHY OF MOTHER TERESA

Mother Teresa of Calcutta (first name Agnese Gonxha), daughter of an Albanian grocer, was born in 1910 in the Macedonian town of Skopje. She entered the congregation of the Sisters of Loreto (Irish) in 1928 and was sent to Dajeeling, India.
In 1948, after a few years of teaching at the Saint Mary High School of Calcutta, a college for Catholic girls, she received the authorization from Rome, with the signature of Pope Pius XII, to leave the convent.

At the age of thirty-seven, Sister Teresa wears for the first time a white "sari" (traditional dress of Indian women) of raw cotton, adorned with a blue border, the colors of the Virgin Mary. He goes around asking for food and medicine, begging to cure and feed his poor.
After three days he opens a school, in the open air, under a tree.

His home is a dirt shack and there he brings those who are not welcomed into hospitals. In February 1949 Michele Gomez, an official of the state administration, made available to Sister Teresa a room on the top floor of a house on Creek Lane and the first sister arrived there. In the autumn of 1950, Pope Pius XII officially authorized the new institution, called "Congregation of the Missionaries of Charity".

During the winter of 1952, one day when she goes looking for the poor, she finds a woman who agonizes on the street, too weak to fight against the mice that gnaw her toes. He takes her to the nearest hospital, where, after many difficulties, the dying woman is accepted. Sister Teresa then came up with the idea of asking the municipal administration to assign a room to welcome abandoned agonists.

In addition to the life that goes out, the founder also looks at the nascent life with the opening of the Children's House, Shishu bhavan, where she welcomes abandoned children, often found in rubbish bins.

Many of Mother's projects are being carried out but perhaps the most ambitious one is missing: removing the lepers, her favorite children as she defines them, from the slums. He goes every day to find and care for them in their poor shacks but hopes to build a city for them. She already knows that she will build it on the Asansol land donated by the government, that 400 families of lepers will have to live there and that she will call it "City of Peace", Chantinabal but she lacks the money. Thanks to aid and prizes, the village of peace comes. Within the city there are shops, gardens, the post office and schools.

By now the name of Mother Teresa crosses the borders of India and so the congregation is opened in Cocorote, Venezuela, the first home of the Missionaries of Charity. It is July 1965.

In 1979 he received the Balzan Prize and the Nobel Peace Prize. Many other certificates of esteem and gratitude will follow. In 1989 she was proclaimed woman of the year.

The scent of Mother Teresa's charity has now reached the five continents where more than 4000 of her religious are present: in India there are 150 houses, in other countries in Asia 30, in Oceania 10, in Europe 45, in the Americas 52 and in Africa 30.

After spending her life for the "poorest poor", Mother Teresa died in Calcutta on September 5, 1997
