SRI AUROBINDO

«Il mondo intero aspira alla libertà,

eppure ogni creatura è innamorata

delle proprie catene.

Questo è il primo paradosso e l'inestricabile nodo della nostra natura».

"Selfishness kills the soul; destroy it. Take care, however, that your selflessness does not kill the soul of others"

Sri Aurobindo was born in Calcutta, British India, on August 15, 1872. The father, a doctor, wants a European education for his children and at the age of seven Aurobindo is sent to England with his two older brothers so that he can complete the Education. Despite a life of hardship (the subsidies from his father are soon reduced and then completely lacking) Aurobindo proves to be an exceptional student, managing to keep himself and his brothers with scholarships. At the Cambridge exams, Oscar Browning, his examiner, who defines him as "the most brilliant connoisseur of Greek that I have ever happened to examine" is surprising.
When he returns to India in 1893, at the age of 21, the young Aurobindo knows nothing of his country and his spirituality. However, just before landing, India welcomes him with a sudden and unexpected inner experience. Learn Sanskrit and devote himself to the study of the works that made the Indian spiritual tradition great. At the same time his intuition and his inner vision grow, without however this leading him to abandon the activity in the world. Indeed, he devoted himself to the struggle for the liberation of India from British rule, becoming, together with Tilak and Lajpat Raj, the most important figure of the Indian Risorgimento, long before the advent of Gandhi. Imprisoned in 1908 on charges of being the inspirer of a bomb attack (carried out without Aurobindo's knowledge by the group led by his younger brother, Barin) Sri Aurobindo spends a year in Alipore's prisons. In the isolation of the cell, the inner life of Sri Aurobindo is enriched with new and decisive experiences that put him in contact with a new evolutionary energy destined, according to him, to transform the earth and the destinies of man. Absolved from the charge and released, he continued his political and journalistic activity for a while, founding two weeklies in an attempt to revive the independence movement hard hit by the series of arrests. But the British government is not resigned to his acquittal and seeks new pretexts to have him arrested. The viceroy of the Indies calls him the most dangerous enemy of the Britannicd empire. Informed of an arrest warrant against him, Aurobindo receives the inner command to travel to Pondichéry, a French enclave in Southern India, which he reaches in April 1910 and where he will remain for his entire life.
At Pondichéry Aurobindo lays the foundations for his Integral Yoga, which sees man as a transitional being who has the opportunity to consciously participate in what he defines as the inevitable evolutionary step in the experience of the Earth: the rise of a Realized Man and a new spiritualized humanity. In 1914 she met Mirra Alfassa, the future Mother, who came to Pondichéry with her husband, the French philosopher Paul Richard, for the first time. He convinces Sri Aurobindo to present his thoughts and vision in writing. Thus, from 1914 to 1920, almost all the great works of Sri Aurobindo were born, including: the Divine Life, the Synthesis of Yoga, the Human Cycle, the Ideal of Human Unity. The outbreak of the First World War forced the Richards to leave Pondichéry. Myrrh will return, and this time forever, alongside Sri Aurobindo in April 1920. On November 24, 1926 (the day after the birth of Sri Sathya Sai Baba), he achieved Realization. He called his disciples and said to them: «the Divine has come down to earth. God became incarnate, bringing with him all the powers of divinity 'Omnipotence, Omniscience and Omnipresence ", reaffirming shortly after" 1124 November 1926 Krishna came down in human garments. An infallible power will guide the minds, and the immortal flame will burn in the hearts of the people. The multitudes will listen to his voice ".. thus confirming the birth of the Avatar Sri Sathya Sai Baba (this episode is noteworthy because Putthaparty and Pondichéry are 328 km away, this testimony is also made known in a service of Tg2 of 19861 Thus Sri Aurobindo decides to retire permanently to his rooms, leaving the management of the Ashram and contact with the disciples entirely in the hands of the Mother Sri Aurobindo leaves the physical body on December 5, 1950. Her work is continued by the Mother.

Some sentences of Sri Aurobindo

"The whole world aspires to freedom, yet every creature is in love with its chains. This is the first paradox and the inextricable knot of our nature."

"The love of solitude is a sign of a disposition for knowledge; but knowledge is reached only when loneliness is perceived always and everywhere, in the crowd, in the battle and on the market place '.

"Illness will return to the body if the soul is sick; for the sins of the mind are the secret cause of the sins of the body. Likewise, poverty and worries will always return to man, as long as the human species remains submissive"

«L'amore della solitudine è segno di una disposizione per la conoscenza; ma si giunge alla conoscenza solo quando si percepisce la solitudine sempre e ovunque, nella folla, nella battaglia e sulla piazza del mercato».

«La malattia tornerà nel corpo se l'anima è malata;

poiché i peccati della mente sono la causa segreta

dei peccati del corpo.

Allo stesso modo

la povertà e le preoccupazioni torneranno sempre nell'uomo, finché la specie umana

resterà sottomessa».
